On-Grounds Housing
Graduate students, whether single, married, and/or with families, can choose housing options that provide the convenience of on-Grounds living in an active, safe, and friendly community. Copeley Hill and University Gardens offer one- to three-bedroom apartments on North Grounds, both furnished and unfurnished. Faulkner Drive Rooms feature furnished rooms with full private baths for students seeking simpler accommodations. Students may also apply to live on the Range, Jefferson's original design for the Academical Village. This housing area is located at the center of Grounds and offers single furnished rooms.
Post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, research associates, and medical residents are eligible to apply for Faculty/Staff housing in the Piedmont housing area.

Helpful Tips
Start Looking Early
In this small town with a big university, desirable housing goes quickly. We advise you to begin your housing search as soon as you have decided to attend. University housing is economical and conveniently located, but can accommodate only some of the 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students, so there are usually waiting lists. If you want University housing, call immediately to sign up. If you are planning to come to Charlottesville to see University or commercial housing, call ahead and make appointments. Most places will be closed on the weekends, unless you have an appointment.
Renter's/Homeowner's Insurance
Students should consider purchasing renter's or homeowner's insurance. Look in the phone book for local providers or check with your own insurance company to see if it offers such protection. Insurance prices will depend on your type of residence, the number of units connected to it, and the presence of security devices in the home (smoke detectors, deadbolts, etc.).
There are many apartment complexes within walking distance or a short commute to the University. There are also limited on-Grounds options available. When in doubt about a particular rental location, take the time to ask other graduate students about their housing experiences in Charlottesville.
