PhD+ Future Faculty 2.22 UVA Acts Inclusive Teaching: First Days

Event Date

Part of Level 2.2 Teaching skills training of PhD Plus STEM Future Faculty & Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences Future Faculty Module.

First Days invites faculty aspirants to think clearly about how they introduce their courses on the first day, but it's more than that: This program asks participants to analyze the difference between intent and impact, to consider the power relationships between students and instructors, and to reevaluate the teaching practices they may have inherited. First Days is an excellent way for faculty to building a shared understanding of language, goals, concepts, and skills in equitable teaching.

Program Format

First Days synchronous programming has two parts:

  1. Self-guided Google Slides presentation: Participants move through a Google Slides presentation, filled with filmed scenes and monologues, short content videos, resources and references for further learning, and interactive ways to practice concepts in their own context.
  2. Zoom Dialogue: Participants leave the Google Slides presentation after approximately 45 minutes to come back together and further discuss how these ideas fit within our current context, their areas of teaching/research, and department culture as a whole.
