The Future Faculty Series is designed for PhD candidates and postdocs in advanced years of training who are interested in faculty careers. The content of this series consists of workshops, panel discussions, and asynchronous videos to help you learn about life as a faculty member, how to strategize your research agenda, what hiring committees are looking for, starting to craft your application materials, and more. The series culminates with feedback sessions where participants get personalized and constructive feedback on their materials.

The series begins over the summer with the goal of helping participants draft and receive feedback on their application materials before the announcement of faculty positions begins. Participants who are planning to apply for faculty positions during the 2026-2027 academic year are strongly encouraged to participate in as many sessions as possible.

Session Description

The research statement (or statement of research interests) is a common component of academic job applications. It provides an opportunity for the job candidate to describe their research accomplishments, current work, and future direction while making a case for why their line of inquiry matters. In this session, participants will learn about approaches and best practices for crafting a compelling and cohesive research statement, especially for job applications that require a research statement as a stand-alone document (versus as part of one's cover letter).

NOTE: This discussion focuses on STEM research statements. For the session focused on Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences research statements click here.
