Sam Lake
In his role as the Assistant Director of Research Communication, Dr. Sam Lake (he/him/his) supports the professional development of graduate students and postdocs by providing training and advising to ensure they will be successful in a wide range of careers. He collaborates with other members of PhD Plus and university partners to promote successful fellowship and grant writing practices, strengthen communication skills, and prepare individuals for academic faculty, science policy, resource management, and other career opportunities.
Sam is passionate about supporting early-career professionals from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines and strives to foster a strong sense of community. He is an active collaborator on diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility projects focused on the growth, persistence, and success of historically marginalized and underserved students. Prior to joining UVA, Sam received his Ph.D. in marine science from William & Mary, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and his Bachelor’s degree in marine science and biology from Coastal Carolina University. Most recently, he managed Virginia Sea Grant’s research portfolio, including professional development training, graduate and post-graduate fellowships, and state and federal research programs.
